On behalf of the Special Operations Medical Association, we’d like to invite you to the 2018 Special Operations Medical Association’s Scientific Assembly (SOMSA). This is the 30th anniversary of SOMA and the organization continues to serve its mission: to advance the science, technology, knowledge and skills of unconventional medicine to improve the survival, reduce suffering and speed recovery of those who become injured and ill in SOF operations or other Tactical settings.
We have a great schedule of speakers in what we think will spark the interest of all levels of SOF, military, and civilian prehospital providers. Since its formation three decades ago, SOMA has endeavored to advance the art and science of Special Operations Medicine. During that time, we have grown from a small but dedicated group of like-minded SOF medical providers meeting in one hotel conference room in Fayetteville NC, to Tampa FL and now Charlotte NC. Although the meeting places have changed we are the premiere and most relevant international medical society in the world hosting a meeting of more than 1000 attendees from more than two dozen countries. The 2018 Special Operations Medicine Scientific Assembly (SOMSA) is an independently SOMA-hosted event. By registering for annual training at SOMSA as a Military Medic or Current DoD Employee, you will receive continuing education credits (up to 36.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for Physicians, application has also been made through CAPCE for non-physician credits), primary access to presentations, lectures, and SOMSA events while being granted free access to the SOMSA Exhibition Hall.
Military and DoD personnel must follow the policy for attending a Non-DoD-Hosted event and are encouraged to keep individual costs below $3,000. (IAW DoD Conference Guidelines, Version 4.0 dated 26 June 16, "For conferences estimated to cost less than $3,000 per attendee and less than $600 per day per civilian employee or military member, and for no-cost conferences, approval authority is delegated to supervisors with normal TDY/TAD approval authority, consistent with organizational guidelines.") Individuals and units are encouraged to initiate internal command-directed approval procedures as early as possible to ensure attendees are eligible.
SOMA remains committed to improving the survival and reducing the suffering of those that serve in harm's way through the continuous advancement of SOF medicine and will continue to pursue options that will allow as many military and DOD personnel to attend SOMSA as possible.

Before you Book Your Room:
Reservations for all hotels may be made by phone or via the direct reservation links found below. For reservations by phone, please be sure to request the SOMA Group ID codes noted below to ensure that you are included in the SOMA room block and receive the SOMSA discounted room rate.
There are a limited number of room’s available at all three hotels at the prevailing per diem rate.
Hotels may sell out prior to April 23, the published cutoff date. Make your reservations early.
In consideration of others,
please do not book
more rooms than necessary. Holding a block of rooms that will be cancelled in the last month prior to the meeting may keep many attendees from staying at the host hotels and cause SOMA to lose revenue which helps to keep rates low.
Taxi service is available from the airport curbside, on the Baggage Claim level. The current rate to the city center is $25 one-way (subject to change).
